SigEx Telecom : Nokia starts global positioning service
by Delia Cruceru
On Thursday Nokia Inc. launched a new GPS service for Nokia 6110 Navigator and Nokia 65 multimedia computer. The new service helps users to find their current location or a desired location. The Assisted GPS (A-GPS) service which Nokia released will reduce the startup time known as time to first fix (TTFF), meaning users will found out their current location in one minute from three minutes currently. Ralph Eric Kunz, vice-president, multimedia experiences, Nokia says:â By decreasing the time wasted while you wait for a first fix, we are increasing the enjoyment that Nokia Maps provides. Consumers now have the comfort of quick fix times which create a better navigation experience when using Nokia Maps." Users that already hold a Nokia 65 can download this service through Nokia Software Updater, and they can use it for free. Nokia plans to incorporate this service to all of its future handsets and allows service providers to provide their own regional A-GPS services making it more accurate and it will be available in 40 different languages. The Finnish company released its N65 cellular at a price starting from 700 Euro and plans to extend to larger markets and hopes that the new service will boost the price of its phones. It is expected that the company will ship 12 million units until 2009 in Europe and U.S.
